What materials are biocompatible?
The answer is different for different patients. Biocompatible simply means that your unique biological system will have no adverse reaction to the materials used. Not every patient will have a reaction to dental materials, just as not everyone is allergic to tomatoes or strawberries. But for people who do have a sensitivity to materials commonly used in dentistry, the effects can be traumatic. If you are concerned about allergic reactions, or are already experiencing symptoms, we can provide a referral form for the tests necessary to determine the exact triggers for your allergy. The blood work is sent to a certified CLIA lab that specializes in this type of testing. They test for sensitivity to an extensive list of dental materials and send the test results to our office. Your treatment is then customized to avoid the use of any materials that are not biocompatible for you. If you already know of sensitivities to materials we use, such as epinephrine or latex, please inform us and we will use substitute materials.
