Many dental conditions do not have apparent symptoms until they are severe, so a dental examination may be the only opportunity for early diagnosis and conservative treatment. The most conservative, and least expensive, medicine is still preventive medicine. That is why, at SunBird Dental, we begin our patient relationships with a comprehensive evaluation and recommend periodic examinations and professional cleanings about twice a year. We know that the sooner we are able to make you aware of a potential problem the sooner you can make the choice to prevent that problem from becoming worse.
The primary purpose of a professional cleaning is to remove tartar (also called calculus) which is plaque that has hardened on the teeth. Once plaque has been allowed to harden into tartar it can only be removed by a dental professional, a toothbrush just can't do the job. Tartar provides an ideal environment for bacteria to grow, causing decay and periodontal (gum) disease. So the best way to prevent dental disease is still to brush and floss regularly and have a professional cleaning as often as necessary to maintain a clean and healthy mouth.
