Sedation Dentistry

ProcedureAt SunBird Dental we offer a wide variety of sedation options to keep you comfortable. All of our treatment rooms are equipped with nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for the safest, most effective administration of this highly effective relaxant. For your safety, our assistants have had special training in the monitoring of nitrous oxide and oxygen.

In addition to nitrous oxide, we offer two levels of sedation to make your dental procedures more comfortable for you.

Pre-Treatment Relaxation and Oral Conscious Sedation

For patients who have extensive treatment needs or just need a little extra reassurance, Dr. Payne will customize a pre-treatment prescription for oral medication that will offset any anxiety and discomfort. If you feel that being "just a little out of it" will make your visit more comfortable don't hesitate to ask. To "sleep through your next visit and wake up with a brand new smile" ask for oral conscious sedation.

What makes this type of sedation perfect for most patients is that it involves only oral medication, a simple little pill, no shots or needles. The medication is carefully regulated so that you are in a twilight state where you are conscious but not really aware. Perfectly comfortable, floaty, dreamy, and completely relaxed.

Not only is this type of sedation ideal for patients who dread going to the dentist, it is also a real relief for patients who want to have extensive treatment completed in one or two appointments. Since keeping your mouth open for long periods of time can result in post operative discomfort, many patients avoid appointments that are more than one to two hours long. But with oral conscious sedation your jaw muscles stay completely relaxed so you can comfortably sit (or lie back) during longer procedures without the discomfort.

Conscious Sedation May be For You if You Have:

  • Experienced trauma from dental procedures in the past.
  • Experienced difficulty getting numb.
  • Sensitive teeth.
  • Limited time to complete your dental care.
  • Fear of needles or shots.
  • A desire to experience the ultimate in relaxation during your dental procedures.
Total Sedation (General Anesthetic)

For medically compromised or highly anxious patients, Dr. Payne is on staff with McPherson Memorial Hospital and has years of experience performing dental procedures under general sedation on an outpatient basis. This allows our patients the option of general anesthetic if they have extensive needs, are medically compromised or have special needs that would make treatment in a traditional dental setting traumatic or medically unadvisable.

We take emergency preparedness very seriously and Dr. Payne and Teresa Payne, RN are ACLS certified. The entire staff is CPR certified and the 911 response time from McPherson Memorial Hospital is less than five minutes.
